Beyond Button Pushing: Why Music Literacy Matters in the Instrumental Classroom

When students learn to play an instrument, what are they actually learning? For many beginning band students, the answer is troubling: they’re learning to be “button pushers” who associate fingerings with notation rather than with sound (Schleuter, 1997). This mechanical approach to instrumental instruction misses something fundamental about music education—the development of true music literacy.
Recent research has converged on a compelling finding: the way we teach beginning instrumentalists needs a major shift. Instead of diving straight into reading notation, students need to develop aural skills and musical understanding first. This “sound-before-symbol” approach isn’t just theoretically appealing—it’s backed by solid evidence showing improvements in sight-reading, rhythm skills, and ear-playing abilities.
