FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We know choosing a music teacher is a big decision, and you probably have questions. Here are answers to the most common ones—but if we don’t cover something, reach out! We’re always happy to talk.

About Our Approach

  1. Why do we have to start with music literacy?
    • Great question! Here’s the short answer: because it works.
    • Music is a language, and your brain learns it the same way it learns spoken language—through listening, echoing, internalizing patterns, and eventually creating on your own. When students build that foundation first, they don’t just play notes—they understand what they’re playing. They progress faster, retain more, and genuinely enjoy music more because it makes sense to them.
    • We get it—most studios hand kids an instrument right away. And we could do that too. But we’re not interested in shortcuts. We’re interested in building musicians who love what they do and stick with it for the long haul. That takes patience and a real foundation.
    • If you want to understand the full “why” behind this approach, check out our Philosophy page. It’ll make a lot more sense.
  2. What if my child already plays an instrument?
    • No problem! If your student comes in with instrumental experience, they don’t have to start from scratch in Intro to Music Lessons. Music literacy is woven into every lesson we teach, so they’ll build that foundation while continuing to develop on their instrument.
  3. How much practice is expected?
    • That depends on the student, their age, and their goals—but here’s the baseline: learning music requires consistent, daily practice. We’re not talking hours and hours, but we are talking about showing up regularly, even on days when it’s hard.
    • We tailor practice expectations to each student individually, but if you’re not sure your family can commit to daily work, that’s worth discussing upfront. We want to set everyone up for success.
  4. What ages do you teach?
    • We teach students from age 4 all the way through adulthood. Our Intro to Music Lessons are taught in age-appropriate classes, so a 6-year-old isn’t learning alongside a 40-year-old (don’t worry). Everyone learns at the pace that’s right for them.
  5. Do you offer online lessons, or only in-person?
    • Currently, all lessons are in-person at the Reynolds Center on Harding University’s campus in Searcy, Arkansas.

Rates & Policies

  1. How much do lessons cost?
    • Private lessons are $40 per hour, regardless of instrument or lesson content (clarinet, piano, composition—it’s all the same rate). Currently, we only offer hour-long private lessons. If alternative lesson lengths are needed, please indicate that need on your application.
    • Group classes (Intro to Music Lessons and Music Theory) are $30 per student for each 45-minute class.
  2. How much do group classes cost?
    • Intro to Music Lessons and Music Theory classes are $30 per student for each 45-minute class. Classes are organized by age group to ensure everyone learns at an appropriate pace:
      1. Ages 4-6
      2. Ages 6-10
      3. Ages 10-14
      4. Ages 14-18
      5. Ages 18-22
      6. Ages 23+
    • Class sizes are flexible based on enrollment—we don’t cap the number of students per age group. This keeps classes accessible while maintaining quality instruction.
    • Payment for group classes follows the same structure as private lessons: you can pay monthly or for the full semester upfront.
  3. What payment options do you offer?
    • You have two options:
      1. Monthly Payment: Pay for all lessons scheduled within a calendar month by the time of the first lesson of that month.
      2. Full Semester Payment: Pay for the entire semester upfront (typically 16 weeks) by the time of the first lesson.
    • Payment is made through Zelle. If you need an alternative arrangement (cash, check, or another digital payment method), just talk to us and we’ll work something out.
  4. What if payment is late?
    • If payment isn’t received by the first lesson of the month, lessons will be paused until payment is made. We know life happens. If you’re experiencing financial difficulty, please talk to us. We’d rather find a solution together than create stress.
  5. What’s your cancellation and makeup lesson policy?
    • If you need to be late or miss a lesson, let us know at least 24 hours in advance. We’ll reschedule a makeup lesson whenever possible.
    • We understand that sometimes 24-hour notice just isn’t possible—life is unpredictable. Just communicate with us as soon as you can and we’ll work it out. However, if last-minute cancellations become a consistent pattern, the student may lose their place in the studio.
    • Refunds are not provided for missed lessons, but we’ll always do our best to reschedule.
  6. What if the instructor has to cancel?
    • If we have to cancel a lesson, we’ll schedule a makeup lesson with you as soon as possible.
  7. What happens if I need to withdraw from lessons?
    • We get it—sometimes life changes and continuing lessons isn’t feasible. Here’s how withdrawals work:
    • Refunds are only available if you formally request withdrawal from the studio. When you withdraw, you’re also requesting removal from our roster.
    • Refund calculation:
      • You’ll receive 80% of the remaining prepaid lesson fees (we retain 20% as an administrative fee)
      • Refunds only apply to lessons scheduled 72 hours or more from the time of your refund request
      • Lessons scheduled within 72 hours are non-refundable
      • Example (Monthly Payment): You prepay $160 for four lessons in October. After the first lesson, you request withdrawal. If you request 72+ hours before Lesson 2, your refund is $96 (80% of the remaining $120). If you request within 72 hours of Lesson 2, your refund is $64 (80% of $80, since Lesson 2 is non-refundable).
  8. Can I come back later if I withdraw?
    • Maybe! If you withdraw, future reacceptance will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the reason for withdrawal. If we remove a student from the studio for behavioral or commitment issues, reacceptance is highly unlikely.

Enrollment & Logistics

  1. How do I apply for lessons?
    • Start by filling out our pre-screening application. This helps us understand your goals, your availability, and whether our studio is a good fit for you. Once we review your application, we’ll reach out to schedule a conversation and, if it’s a good match, get you enrolled!
  2. When can we start?
    • We’re currently accepting new students for Spring 2026. Availability depends on our schedule and current enrollment, but we’ll do our best to find a time that works for you.
  3. Is there a waiting list?
    • Not right now! But depending on demand, that could change. The sooner you apply, the better.
  4. Where are lessons held?
    • All lessons take place at the Reynolds Center on Harding University’s campus in Searcy, Arkansas. It’s a beautiful facility with dedicated practice and teaching spaces.
  5. What days/times are available?
    • Lesson times are scheduled individually based on instructor and student availability. We’ll work with you to find a time that fits your schedule.
  6. Do students need to own their instrument before starting?
    • Not for Intro to Music Lessons—those classes don’t require an instrument yet.
    • For instrumental lessons, yes, students will eventually need access to their own instrument. We’re happy to provide guidance on purchasing or renting, and we can point you toward reputable music stores and rental programs in the area.

WHAT IF YOUR STUDIO
ISN'T THE RIGHT FIT FOR US?

  • Then we’d love to help you find what is.
  • Pinzón Music Studio serves a specific type of student with a specific approach to learning. We’re committed to music literacy, long-term growth, and high expectations. If that resonates with you, great—let’s talk. But if your goals are different, or you’re looking for a more flexible or casual approach, that’s completely valid too.
  • We’re not here to compete for students. As a Blue HORYZIN business, our mission is to make music education 100% accessible, which sometimes means pointing families toward other wonderful teachers and programs in the area. The Searcy Community School of Music, local private instructors, and school programs all do fantastic work, and we’re happy to recommend the right fit for your needs.
  • At the end of the day, what matters most is that you find a teacher and approach that helps you grow. If that’s us, amazing. If it’s not, we’ll help you find your people.
